Quad Cities gets drenched. Where are the rain barrels?

In a matter of 3 hours parts of the Davenport area reported nearly 2 inches of rainfall this morning. When Davenport receives a large amount of rain we can experience serious flash flooding relatively quick. Duck Creek was out of its banks, surrounding streams and creeks were gushing with water, the Wapsi is now well above flood stage and of course, basements leaked (mine being one of them).

These are the obvious effects of large amounts of rain water. People just assume that when it rains, streams and creeks will flood. Well, why is that? Its because homes' & business' (except the Davenport Police Station) direct their properties rain water runoff into the city's sewer system and eventually into our streams and creeks. As the storm water builds up it carries with it all the pollution, contaminants and debris that clutter our streets. This eventually ends up in the Mississippi, where my family and friends love to boat in. Most people may not realize that the amount presipitation we receive does affect our water pollution.

This brings me to my next green topic of Rain Barrels. Ok, its not quick remedy to our waterway's pollution but, on a large scale it will surely make a difference.

River Action in Davenport, IA provides rain barrels to anyone concerned with not only reducing the amount of rain water their property sheds into the river but also reducing their future water bills. A rain barrel will capture up to 60 gallons of your roof top run off. It simply connects to your existing downspout and fills itself until it is full. If 60 gallons is not enough to capture all of the run off you can place another barrel and connect them in a series. Or simply place one on another downspout. At a later time, when rain is scarce, simply turn on the nozzle and water your garden, wash you car, or fill up your watering can and water your interior plants.

Rain Barrels can be purchased at:

I checked with them to see if they currently have any in stock. The woman told me they go quick and they have another shipment coming in early June. They can be purchased for $75. Oh yeah, and they are made from recycled plastics.

Some quick facts:
Our Quad City climate produces an average of 33 inches of rain and snow annually.
40% of the nations storm water run off ends up in the Mississippi River.
River Action has sold more than 2000 rain barrels to the Quad Cities.
